Idomeneo, re di Creta, K. 366, is an opera seria composed by Mozart in 1781. The libretto by Giambattista Varesco is based on a French text by Antoine Danchet. Set in the aftermath of the Trojan War, the opera follows the trials of King Idomeneo of Crete, who vows to sacrifice the first person he meets upon his return home to appease the god Neptune. Tragedy strikes as this person turns out to be his son, Idamante. The opera explores themes of duty, sacrifice, and divine intervention. Highlights include the dramatic "Fuor del mar" aria and the moving quartet "Andrò ramingo e solo." Mozart’s score combines the grandeur of opera seria with innovative orchestration and vivid characterizations, making "Idomeneo" a powerful and expressive work that marks an important step in his operatic development.

" Idomeneo is Mozart's greatest opera seria and his first dramatic masterpiece, yet for almost two centuries, between its premiere in Munich in 1781 and the 1950s, it was hardly performed at all. "
